Anthrax spores have been found in the diplomatic mail pouch at the US embassy in Vienna, an Austrian government spokesman said today.
Mr Rudolf Gollia, spokesman for the government's security apparatus, said on national radio that the US embassy was on alert and there was no threat to the Austrian people.
He said the embassy informed the Austrian authorities yesterday and that the first tests on the substance were conducted by the Austrian defence ministry.
The information was confirmed by a State Department spokesman in Washington.
