Marine rescue divers have recovered the body of a man who went missing on Lough Corrib in Co Galway this afternoon.

The angler's body was discovered shortly after 5 p.m. and was taken to University College Hospital in Galway.

The man had been fishing with another angler on Lough Corrib when their boat drifted from a mooring on an island in the lake.

It is understood the man tried to swim after the boat to bring it ashore and disappeared from view shortly afterwards. His companion then raised the alarm, shortly before 2.30 p.m.

The Shannon-based coastguard helicopter and Valentia Marine Rescue were involved in the search operation.
