WORDING OF BALLOT:WHEN THEY go to the polls in the Lisbon Treaty referendum on June 12th, voters will be presented with a ballot paper asking them whether or not they approve of the 28th Amendment of the Constitution Bill, 2008.

The full text of the constitutional amendment, as outlined in the Bill, will not be on the ballot paper but will be available for inspection at polling stations.

The format for the ballot paper will be as in previous referendums. It will be in Irish and in English.

Unlike in general elections when voters are asked to use numbers to mark the ballot paper, voters will be asked to place an X in a box approving the treaty or in another box rejecting it.

The full text of the 28th amendment to Article 29.4 of the constitution contains a number of provisions. One is that the State may ratify the Lisbon Treaty signed on December 13th last year.

Among other provisions are a restatement of Irish neutrality and the option to exercise the protocol which provides that Ireland may join the United Kingdom in opting out of the provisions on justice and security in the treaty.
