Adams tops poll in Louth

 

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has topped the poll in Louth, taking over 15,000 first preferences and securing election on the first count.

Fine Gael incumbent TD Fergus O’Dowd was also elected on the first count, taking 13,980 votes. The quota was 13,864.

Labour's Gerald Nash took third spot, followed by Fine Gael's Peter Fitzpatrick.

Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour  all ran two candidates each but Mr Adams was the sole Sinn Féin contender. There were eight Independents in the constituency.

The outgoing Ceann Comhairle, Fianna Fáil's Seamus Kirk, was automatically returned to the Dáil.
