An Aboriginal artist of Irish origin is among the exhibitors at an Aboriginal art exhibition to be held at Carlow Institute of Technology this weekend.

The show, "Jalanguwaru", offers a contemporary slant on Aboriginal stories and traditions.

Its centrepiece is by Fiona Foley, one of Australia's leading Aboriginal artists.

The work, entitled "Beyond the Sea", explores the forced migration of Irish people to Australia. Ms Foley's grandfather emigrated to Australia from Co Waterford in the 1930s.

The exhibition, which opens on Saturday, has 30 works, including bark paintings and wood sculptures.
