31 new cases of virus at Glasgow hospital

A further 31 cases of viral infection have been detected at a Glasgow hospital where operations and admissions have been hit.

A further 31 cases of viral infection have been detected at a Glasgow hospital where operations and admissions have been hit.

Glasgow's Victoria Infirmary says 218 staff and patients have now been affected by the winter vomiting bug which causes sickness and diarrhoea.

The figure is up from 187 yesterday, according to health chiefs who admitted the virus had yet to show a downward trend.

As a result, the hospital said it was having to cancel a further 50 admissions for non-emergency surgery at the infirmary and at another hospital in the trust on Tuesday.

Managers had already cancelled 88 admissions scheduled over the next two days.

South Glasgow University Hospitals Trust, which runs the hospital, said the Victoria Infirmary was continuing to operate out-patient and day care services as normal.

But a spokesman said the trust was "disappointed" that it was having to cancel further admissions.

The trust said 149 patients and 69 members of staff had been affected so far.

There are currently 35 patients with symptoms but none is giving cause for concern, the trust said.
