A stg£20,000, (€33,000), reward is being offered in a bid to catch the paramilitaries who murdered a young Catholic postman in Co Antrim.

Mr Daniel McColgan was shot dead by two gunmen as he arrived for work in the staunchly loyalist Rathcoole estate in Belfast last month.

The UDA claimed responsibility for the killing which sparked a wave of revulsion in Northern Ireland.

Mr McColgan's shooting on January 12 came after loyalist terrorists had issued a death threat against Catholic postal workers and teachers.

Now the PSNI have taken the unusual step of announcing a stg£20,000 reward for information leading to the prosecution of Mr McColgan’s killers.

The 20-year-old left behind a girlfriend and baby daughter. The cash reward is being provided by a number of groups.

Det Supt Roy Suitters, the officer leading the hunt for the killers, says his officers were willing to try everything in their quest to convict the culprits.

"Police are prepared to explore a variety of methods to bring those responsible before the courts," he said. "The offer of a substantial reward is one such method."

Detectives have also issued a new appeal for information about Mr Stephen McCullough, whose body was found in Cavehill Country Park overlooking the city days after Mr McColgan was murdered.

Shortly before he died, Mr McCullough, 39, had asked to speak to police about the postman's killing while he was in custody on a separate matter.
