Funding of more than €1 million is to be provided for projects to support the Traveller community, it was announced today.

The money is to allow recommendations in the report of the high level group on Traveller issues to be implemented. Programmes that help Travellers to access services and to participate in society will receive funding.

Frank Fahey, Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, said the money will help new interagency groups set up in each city and county development board after the report was published.

"I want to emphasise the need for state agencies to develop responses to the situation of individual Traveller families and also to give particular support to Traveller individuals and organisations in their dealings with public authorities," he said.
