Plans by the Robert Emmet Society for a commemoration in 2003 of the bicentenary of the 1803 Rising will be launched tomorrow by the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern.
The commemoration, Emmet 200, will include a seminar on the Rising, art, music, pageantry, theatre and sports events. A scholarship will be established and a permanent commemoration will be unveiled.
According to Mr Richard Roche, chairman of the Robert Emmet Society, the commemoration will provide "an objective and contextualised appraisal of the Rising of 1803" and the events would put the Rising in its national and international context. Mrs Justice Susan Denham and historian Dr Ruan O'Donnell will address the inaugural meeting before the Taoiseach launches the Emmet 200 programme.
Members of the public, and anyone with a connection to Robert Emmet have been encouraged to assist a committee which will be formed after the launch at the conference centre at Dublin Castle.
