The driver of an 18-ton digger accused of crashing it into a pub last weekend and endangering the lives of customers was released on bail in the High Court in Belfast yesterday.

A prosecution lawyer said Mr Timothy White (31), from Blenheim Drive, Newtownards, Co Down, took the digger from a building site to prove to a drinking friend that he could drive it.

Mr White is charged with driving under the influence of drink, taking the digger without the owner's permission and damaging Prospero's Bar.

Lord Justice Carswell released Mr White on £500 bail and ordered him not to consume alcohol pending the outcome of his case.
