Medan, Indonesia - Police yesterday released 13 students detained during a protest against President Suharto as the US Secretary of State, Ms Madeleine Albright, said a lack of democracy was impeding Indonesia's economic recovery.

On Monday, there were demonstrations at four campuses in the town of Medan, which, for the moment, has become the focus for protests demanding that the President should go.

Political analysts say there are signs that the student protests, which have occurred in both Sumatra and Java, have some backing within the armed forces and from the older generation.
