A dozen US students, graduate and undergraduate, have been named as George J. Mitchell Scholars and awarded grants to study in universities in Ireland this year.
The scheme, run by the non-profit and non-partisan US-Ireland Alliance, is seen as the prestigious equivalent of the Rhodes and Fulbright scholarship programmes.
The 12 were chosen from more than 200 applicants and were selected for their academic qualifications and for having "demonstrated leadership potential and commitment to community service".
The students reflect very diverse interests from literacy to international human rights.
The 2001 scholars are: Peter Frosch, of Winona, Minnesota (Northwestern Univ/DCU); Dawn Hewett, Seattle (Univ of Washington/TCD); Bryanna Hocking, Eugene, Oregon (Georgetown Univ/UL); Matthew Huenerfaurth, Springfield, Pennsylvania (Univ of Delaware/UCD); Ehrin Kohnson, Camden, Maine (Stanford and Harvard Medical School/UU); Jennifer Lambert, Imro, South Carolina (Furman/UCD); Kathleen Long, Patterson, New Jersey (Georgetown/UCC); Michelle Miles, Bozeman, Montana (Montana State/TCD); Kathleen Romig, Royal Oak, Michigan (Michigan State/UCC); Julia Rosenbloom, Washington DC (Harvard/Queen's); Ben Trachtenberg, Washington DC (Yale/UL); Elisabeth Yu, Indian Head Park, Illinois (Indiana Univ/Queen's).
