A budiling firm has gone into liquidation with the loss of up to 100 jobs.

Workers were told yesterday that the long-established Finchley Construction Limited, based at the Galvone industrial estate in Limerick, was ceasing operations. The company, owned locally, was headed up by Mr John Moran.

The director of the southern region of the Construction Industry Federation, Mr Joe O'Brien, said he regretted very much that this respected company has gone out of business. He did not know why the firm had to be liquidated, but pointed out that the general construction industry is currently going through a downturn. There was no comment available from management.

Garda crackdown on illegal dumping

Gardaí are to set up random roadblocks in the Dublin area in the coming weeks in an attempt to crack down on illegal dumping in the city and county. The gardaí, in co-operation with the four Dublin local authorities, will stop any vehicle suspected of transporting waste illegally. Those found without a proper waste collection permit will face fines of up to €10 million, or a prison sentence.

Householders and businesses using illegal or unregistered waste collectors will also be liable for prosecution.
