Go Cycle:JUST HALF an hour from Dublin I found myself cycling on a mountain, overlooking an expanse of green wondering why I lived in a city. Welcome to Powerscourt estate.

The Ritz-Carlton Powerscourt, Co Wicklow now gives guests the chance to discover the surrounding scenery on guided bike tours.

Ken Farrar (pictured above), a professional road and mountain bike rider, is your guide as you cycle through one of the most scenic parts of Ireland. You can either stick to the roads or choose a mountain bike and head into the wild.

The location is ideal for biking, professionals and amateurs alike, with a multitude of trails snaking through the countryside. Some routes may seem daunting but Ken is on hand to offer advice and, if you ignore his first suggestion to change to a lower gear, you will be sure to heed the second.

Although Ken will tailor the trip to suit your expectations, there are some locations a brisk climb should not put you off seeing. The Powerscourt waterfall is well worth the trip and, although the cascade is at its most imposing during winter, it remains impressive throughout the year.

At the end of the excursion Ken suggested I try his “Guinness challenge” which consists of gathering enough speed to make it up a small rocky hill. He promised me a drink if I made it up, but I faltered at the first stone and had to push the bike. So if you are enjoying a free pint at the end of your cycle, you’ve done well. The cycle is a fun, informative and energetic activity. The only downside is the uncomfortable plastic seats bicycle manufactures insist on putting on mountain bikes.

Prices are €75 per hour and €315 for half a day. The hotel can provide bicycles and helmets. Parties of over six people need a second guide. The Ritz Carlton Powerscourt, Co Wicklow. Tel: 01-204 6000
