John Wheeler reports on the Motorcycle and Scooter Show at the NEC in Birmingham

The Motorcycle and Scooter show, which is held annually in Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre, is one of the largest and most comprehensive assemblies of motorbikes.

The selection of bikes on offer ranges from small commuter bikes on which to beat rush-hour gridlocks, to mean machines which go at breathtaking speeds.

Many manufacturers use the show to launch new varieties, and this year was no different.

We went along to have a look at what was on offer. Here we give a not quite comprehensive list of all the bikes seen at the show but, even better, this is a review of the latest and most interesting machines that you can expect to see in the dealerships in the coming months.

While there is no such thing as 'the best' machine, each of the motor bikes that are mentioned here is, in our view and in its particular class, well worth taking a look at.

In terms of variety, performance and price, today's motorcycles are probably offering more by way of variety and build-quality than ever before.
