Fota House marina rejected: An Bord Pleanála has refused developer Cityking International planning permission for a 60-berth marina at Fota House demesne on Fota Island in Co Cork.

Cityking International lodged a first party appeal after Cork County Council refused planning permission for the development, which is on a site to the west of Fota House.

The board upheld Cork County Council's decision and ruled against the development because the only means of accessing it by car would be via a crossing on the Cork to Cobh railway line, which is only adequate for local traffic. It said without improvements to the crossing, the development would endanger public safety and would be a traffic hazard. The directors of Cityking are Bandon-based Noreen Fleming, John Fleming, Michelle Fleming and Seamus O'Mahony.

The Daughters of Charity has been refused planning permission by An Bord Pleanála to relocate its horticultural training facility at Glen College near Chapelizod, Dublin 20, which is within the curtilage of Glenmaroon house, a protected structure. The Daughters of Charity own a large tract of land on either side of Knockmaroon Hill, which is zoned for high amenity use. The nuns want to move the facility because people with intellectual disabilities who attend the college have to cross a busy road.

The nuns were refused permission on the grounds that the site is located within the Liffey Valley Special Amenity Area, and it is the policy of the planning authority to preserve the open character and natural beauty of the area.

Kenmare leisure scheme appealed

An opponent of Sheen Falls Lodge Estate's plans for a golf and leisure development in Kenmare, Co Kerry has appealed planning permission to An Bord Pleanála. The proposed development includes a golf academy building and golf practice area, tennis court and croquet bowling green, an archery and falconry area and four horse stables, as well as 85 holiday homes.

In an appeal, Margaret Phelan said: "It is my firm belief that this high density development will have a negative impact on the Kenmare area."

Meanwhile, Meadowlawn Properties is looking to build a retail development at the former Torc Great Southern hotel in Killarney. It is looking to build a 35,000sq m (376,736sq ft) retail development with anchor store and eight retail units, a restaurant and basement parking for 563 cars. The directors of Meadowlawn Properties are Limerick-based Robert and Richard Butler.
