Edwardian charm in Foxrock for €2.5m

1903 family home has been extended and redecorated but maintains its period charm

Voewood, one of Foxrock’s classic original houses, pretty and full of charming Edwardian details with a grass tennis court in the garden, last came on the market in 2008. Then it went for auction with an AMV of €5 million.

It didn’t sell on a day that saw many withdrawals as the market ground to a halt.

So the detached family house became a rental property and has been unoccupied now for more than a year while an extensive redecoration programme took place. That is now complete and Voewood is back on the market, through Lisney, with an asking price of €2.5 million.

Built in 1903, it was extended at some point although that extension to the side was so seamless that from the outside it is difficult to tell where the new part begins or ends.

Large diningroom

In classic Edwardian style there is a charming timber veranda porch entrance – though the original tiles have been replaced with Indian sandstone which will make purists wince.

Inside there is a square hall with a fireplace. It opens through double doors into a large diningroom, and there is a drawingroom and sittingroom on this floor too.

All three of these rooms have large Edwardian windows and attractive fireplaces and, while none are particularly grand, they look out onto the garden and have a lovely atmosphere.

A door from the sittingroom leads into a very large kitchen with a cosy seating area at one end. Off the kitchen a corridor leads to a laundry, bathroom, games rooms and sittingroom. While the kitchen units have been spruced up with a coat of paint, it’s likely that buyers will install a new one and rethink the space.

The house has its original staircase in the hall but there is an additional one installed by previous owners for reasons that aren’t clear: a large and quite ugly spiral staircase in the kitchen.

Buyers will probably do away with it to make more space in the kitchen and to create a seating area in the bright landing upstairs.

Upstairs, period features abound, including circular windows, original bedroom fireplaces and access to the terrace over the verandah.

There are six bedrooms – the largest has a vast bathroom which, like the family bathroom, has recently been updated. It features smart contemporary fittings while the family bathroom has refurbished period fittings.

A detached garage was built at some stage in the garden on one side of the house, while on the other is a lawn tennis court.

Voewood is set back from the road and there are lovely mature gardens to the front and rear – in all it sits on nearly a half acre.
