A former rectory in Cloghan, Co Donegal where Isaac Butt, the founder of the Home Rule movement, was born, is on the market through joint agents McElhinney Properties, Milford, and Southebys.

The Glebe House, a four-bedroom house on 2.5 acres of mature grounds, is for sale by private treaty with a price tag of £300,000. Cloghan is a small village on the Glenties road, seven miles from Ballybofey.

The house has been fully refurbished and is decorated to a high standard with some period features intact. It has oil-fired central heating throughout as well as stone outbuildings and could be either a family residence or a holiday home. Above the front doorway is a small plaque commemorating Isaac Butt. Off the entrance hallway is the drawing-room and the dining-room. The drawing-room has attractive fitted bookshelves along one wall and a fireplace with a pine surround.

The bright yellow-painted dining-room leads into a conservatory at the side of the house which has a tiled floor. It overlooks the gardens.

The kitchen has a solid fuel Aga in a redbrick alcove as well as a range of fitted pine units. There is also a pantry.

There are four bedrooms upstairs. The main one has an en suite shower room. The second is also a double and there are two singles, all with fitted storage. The family bathroom is also at this level.

Several well preserved granite outbuildings could be converted to guest accommodation. The gardens are surrounded by mixed deciduous trees. The front garden is mostly in lawn while the rear garden is landscaped with herbaceous borders and a feature archway.

With the salmon-rich River Finn close by, the property could appeal to a family with an interest in fishing.
