By terracing the roof of a single storey extension you can create additional outdoor space as well as removing the unsightly vista of a flat roof extension.

At number 42 Sandford Road the owners used red cedar decking on their terrace.

At the roof's centre point glazing is set flush into the decking to allow additional light into the kitchen underneath.

The polished quartz counter tops throughout feature stone composite.

Brushed aluminium doors and cupboards contrast with the baby blue glass doors that hide myriad tall larder units and frame the American-style fridge freezer.

The present owners had UK-based bespoke kitchen manufacturer Mowlem and Co (0044 207 610 6626) design and build the kitchen.

The company also has a Belfast-based distributor, Teuton and Co (048 9032 5006). These cost from about €81,200 (£55,000).

The country-style kitchen at number 21 Moyne Road stays on the right side of the style fence because of its additional modernist touches.

A simple strip of satinised glazing, set into the counter-top, divides the dining from the cooking areas. It's a small but effective detail created by the architect owner. The radiator in the room is disguised behind a cabinet. It's a simple blend of vertical wood strips topped with polished white marble. The Estremoz marble was sourced from Paul O'Neill Marble and Granite Works (01-2849855). Each marble shelf will cost about €400. Alan McCann of Stonehouse Furniture (042-9376863) can build this style of radiator cabinet, in poplar, for €400 per cabinet.

The Hans Wenger wishbone chairs are from Nordic Living (01-2886680), costing €508 upwards, and the Jean Prouvé Gueridon dining table in natural oak, was bought in Haus (01-6795155) for €1,389.
