John Wilson: Big name, small price in Marks & Spencer’s Classics range

Wines for the Weekend: The M&S line-up includes a surprising Soave and a meaty Médoc

Two well-known names from Marks & Spencer this week. Inexpensive Soave can be very disappointing. Marks & Spencer offers two Soaves, one decent one, for €7.30, plus the one featured here, which is certainly worth paying the few extra euro for. Médoc, in Bordeaux, is home to some of the world’s greatest red wines. Sadly, these will set you back large sums of money. But the lesser chateaux can offer good value for money. It is not often you find a Médoc at this price, still less one as good as this.

M&S Classics No 8 Soave 2019, €11
Light and refreshing, with clean green apples and lemon zest, this would be perfect as an aperitif, or served alongside spaghetti with clams or pesto, or gnocchi with spinach and ricotta.

Fleur de Moussas 2018, Médoc, €11.80
This has a lovely concentration of juicy dark fruits, a savoury touch, light tannins and a nice finish. You could try it with some rare lamb or beef, either roasted or grilled, or with stuffed red peppers.
