John Wilson: Bargains from Ireland’s favourite wine country

Wines for the Weekend: A Chilean red and white, from Colchagua Valley, for €10 each at Tesco

To Chile this week, a country that offers great value for money. Perhaps unsurprisingly, its wines are the most popular in Ireland. I suspect that Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon are among the most popular grape varieties, too. These two fine examples are on offer at Tesco.

Carmen Premier 1850 Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2020, Colchagua Valley, Chile, 13.5%, €10 (down from €14.76)
Floral, herbal aromas lead on to a refreshing palate of lemon zest, pears and stone fruits, with a nicely rounded finish. This would make a great aperitif or a good partner for fish dishes. Grilled sea bass with herbs and lemon would be perfect with this.

Carmen Premier 1850 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2019, Colchagua Valley, Chile, 13% €10 (down from €14.76)
Smooth and soft, with ripe cassis and blackcurrants overlaid with tobacco and vanilla spice. Cabernet is a great match for red meats, so try this with a roast of beef or lamb. Vegetarians should match it with dishes featuring red peppers.
