Wear It Out: John Leo Gillen’s creativity spills into his fashion choices with a bravery in his outfits

This week we meet John Leo Gillen from Galway, the man behind Electric/BiteClub in Galway. Gillen has overhauled the venue in the last few years, designing all the interiors himself. He and his partner in crime Mary Nally run pop-up bars around the country.

They will be based in Dublin for October – so expect some superb events and bars over the coming weeks. See maryandjohn.ie for more.

Gillen’s creativity spills out into his fashion choices. He has a bravery in the outfits he puts together and often looks like he has been dropped right out of Berlin or New York. Wearing a mix of new designers, high street and carefully sourced vintage, his is a look to be envied.

This week, he is nailing it with his accessory of choice, a gorgeous BMX bike which he picked up in Clondalkin the night before the shoot.

Jacket: A beautiful Danish design from Copenhagen- based company Rains, which specialises in rainwear. The simple design makes this a versatile piece that will remain unaffected by the trends in fashion.

Mesh vest: Retro sportswear is so popular at the moment, with mesh increasingly become everyday wear. A bold statement and very effective. American Apparel at Asos, Retro Mes Vest €9.95.

Sweatpants: These pants are hard to rock. They wouldn't work for everyone but Gillen makes it look effortless.
