DJ KHALED ft KANYE WEST
Theraflu G.O.O.D. Music **
In one fell swoop Kanye manages to outrage animal rights activists, incur a cease- and-desist order from the makers of an over-the-counter cough medicine and fuel tabloid speculation about his relationship with reality star Kim Kardashian. Which must be killing him, when you think about it, because he really hates to be the centre of attention.
SOLAR BEARS
Cosmic Runner **
The Pitchfork-endorsed Dublin/Wicklow electronic duo return with their first new track since 2010’s She Was Coloured In album. It sounds like dodgy 1970s Open University filler music to me, but maybe thats what the kids are into these days?
PULP
Common People (Live on Jimmy Fallon) ****
Maybe it’s the enthusiasm of the college-aged studio audience, or the presence of the legendary Roots crew as house band. But for whatever reason, Jimmy Fallon’s late night show consistently coaxes above par live performances from its musical guests. Here, Pulp breathe rip-roaring new life into what was hitherto the most over-familiar song in their back catalogue. (Lookout for a classic Jarvis-as-space cadet moment on 5:19, where the singer stares transfixed at his right hand as though he hadn’t noticed it was there before.)
WINDINGS
The Space I Occupy Out on a Limb Records ****
This Limerick indie band’s logo is a kid playing the melodica. But if you think that’s the geekiest thing about Windings, then you clearly haven’t seen their press shots. (L-R: Mike Nesmith, Michael Cera, All-Ireland World of Warcraft champion, All-Ireland World of Warcraft runner-up, etc.)
ANE BRUN ft JOSÉ GONZÁLEZ
Worship Balloon Ranger Recordings ****
The second single from Ane Brun’s It All Starts With One album is a spooky duet with lo-fi Swedish indie superstar (of a few years ago) José González.
Brun plays Vicar Street on April 27th.
