The Improvised Music Company's first big concert of the year features pianist and composer, Jarmo Savolainen (right), one of the greats of the thriving Finnish jazz scene. A virtuoso originally inspired by Corea and Jarrett, with a solid classical background, he has, in a career at the centre of his country's jazz life, also found time to record with such American talents as saxophonist Dave Liebman, trumpeters Wallace Roney and Tim Hagans, and drummer Billy Hart. Recent years have seen him lead his own trio, John's Sons, which released its debut album in 1988. Joining him at Whelan's for what should be an adventurous concert tomorrow night will be Italian tenor Claudio Fasoli, whose associations - including Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland and Lee Konitz - should give an indication of where his sympathies lie. Completing the quartet will be the equally probing Ronan Guilfoyle (bass) and Conor Guilfoyle (drums).
