Fun for all is promised at the fundraising garden fête in the splendid grounds of the ex-military hospital, Leopardstown Park, when it plays host to one of the best-known garden fêtes in south Dublin this Sunday.
This particular party in the park is now in its tenth year and managed to attract over 3,000 people last year. It is a team effort supported by a host of volunteers, staff, patients and residents.
Rita Conroy, who has been involved in the organisation of the event for six years, says it is a day for all the family.
"There's really something for everyone," she says. Stalls include a Wheel of Fortune that will continue all afternoon, while plants, books, bric-a-brac and cakes will also be on sale. There will be a bouncing castle and a mini train for the children.
"The grounds alone are worth coming to see," she says. Located next to Leopardstown Racecourse and on the edge of one of Dublin's most expansive industrial parks, the hospital is renowned locally as a haven of old fashioned charm and tranquillity set amid stunning gardens and parkland.
"The gardens are impeccably kept by groundsmen and gardeners," says Ms Conroy. One gardener who lives and works in the hospital is George Hinch. He looks after shrubs and plants in the greenhouse all year round.
Last year around €28,000 was raised for hospital improvements and for the provision of a new wing, which is now entering its final phase and set for completion at the end of September.
This extension will house 50 new beds.
Even a little rain will not dampen spirits as the events can be moved inside to the concert hall, and the show will go on. The fête begins at 1 p.m.
