Freedom box tops estimate

Irish provincial silver of the 18th century proved especially popular at the James Adam salerooms last month when a circular George III freedom box made by William Ward of Limerick in 1802 sold for £8,800, considerably over its top estimate of £6,000. A pair of large George II oval sauceboats, also from Limerick where they were made by Colins Brehan circa 1740 (although chased some 80 years later) fetched £5,000 and a circular Cork tea caddy by Samuel Reily of Cork, circa 1800 went for £3,600. Some £3,000 was paid for a 1771 silver-gilt cup and cover, engraved with the arms of the Earls of Rosebery and made by Charles Townsend of Dublin; this had been included in the 1977 Mentmore sale conducted by Sotheby's. Finally, a pair of George III shaped-circular salvers by William Homer of Dublin fetched £2,300, a George II pear-shaped beer jug possibly by Alexander Brown of Dublin £4,000 and a late 17th century cylindrical mug by David King of Dublin £2,000.
