THE IFA yesterday gave a general welcome for the news of a possible merger, but individual farmer shareholders and milk suppliers in Waterford and surrounding counties stressed their concern over the long-term implications for employment in both companies, writes Dick Grogan.
Although they hold a controlling share in Waterford Co-op, farmers were also worried that their influence in the group might be weakened in the aftermath of a huge merger. Sources said their attitude could be determined by whatever detailed proposals emerge concerning the sharing of control after an amalgamation of the two groups.
The lack of detailed information on the overture from Avonmore caused considerable confusion in the farming community. , It was conceded that a merger could hold substantial short-term benefits for milk suppliers and shareholders.
