Nokia has said that its first US-compatible general packet radio service (GPRS)-enabled wireless phone is expected to be available in the Americas by year-end. The Nokia 8390 supports the most recent WAP release, WAP 1.2.1, which enables the possibility of "push" services such as continuous news updates.

Nokia has adopted a cautious approach to GPRS and is planning to release the Nokia 8310, its first GPRS phone for Europe, in the third quarter.
