Wall Street stocks fell slightly yesterday, ending a six day streak of record breaking gains as investors tried to hold onto their profits.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 9.95 to close at 7,772.09. At one point, the bluechip barometer hit a high of 7,795.16, but in the end it failed to keep up its recent blistering pace.

Declines slightly outnumbered advances by a narrow margin on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 414.2 million shares.

Broadmarket indexes were mixed. The NYSE composite index fell 0.16 to 465.01. The American Stock Exchange composite index fell 1.93 to 628.17.

The Standard and Poor's 500 list rose 0.20 to close at a record 893.47. The Nasdaq composite index, which has lagged other indicators, rose 8.97 to a record 1,432.00.

The string of six straight record closes for the Dow is impressive but not near the record of 12, set in January 1987, nine months before that year's crash.
