Technology start-ups are being invited to apply for this year’s “Spark of Genius” competition, which aims to find the best technology start-up in the country.

Supported by Electric Ireland, the competition runs alongside the Dublin Web Summit and is entering its third year.

Entries open on July 2nd, with the winners announced at the end of the web summit on October 18th.

Dublin Web Summit founder Paddy Cosgrave said the competition was going from strength to strength.

“We see a lot of young start-ups and the Spark helps to give these guys an edge with cash as well as accountancy and legal services from KPMG and others,” he said. “As a boot-strapped start-up, legal and accounting services are often neglected but they’re the backbone of any successful business.”

More than 150 early stage tech entrepreneurs entered the competition last year, all looking to share in the prize fund of more than €100,000 in cash and services.

Previous stars of the competition include 2010 winner DataHug, which analyses corporate communications to create a professional network, and received funding of more than €1 million last year.

In 2011, Redeem Get scooped the top prize. The company, which helps its customers manage deal-of-the- day offers through services like Living Social and Groupon, recently unveiled its new service for online marketers Daily Deal Pro on Times Square in New York.

“Given the calibre of last year’s entrants and their business ideas and given how the Dublin Web Summit showcases Irish tech entrepreneurship to a global audience, we are delighted to be able to again sponsor the inspiring initiative that is the Electric Ireland Spark of Genius award,” Electric Ireland’s Liam Molloy said.
