Google Nestcam: Smart home security with built-in brains

With on-device image processing, this new camera can tell your dad and your dog apart

Google’s newest Nestcam has two powerful advantages over similar cameras. Not only does it have a rechargeable battery – which opens up possibilities for the device, meaning it can go indoors, outdoors, up on a wall or sit on the countertop – but it also has some built-in brains.

The main difference between this generation of cameras and its predecessors is the on-device processing. The camera will do some image processing – looking to identify people versus animals and packages – so you get fewer notifications that are of no use to you and only get the most important ones. That means no need to send your footage to the cloud for processing, so it is quicker, and also more private.
