HP, the company formed out of the merger of Hewlett-Packard and Compaq, will shed just 80 jobs out of a total Irish workforce of 4,200 as a result of the merger.
This amounts to 2 per cent of HP's Irish workforce and compares favourably with the 15 per cent headcount reduction figure set for HP's global operations.
IDA Ireland welcomed the limited nature of the job losses announced yesterday, which follow months of speculation about what the impact of the merger would be in the Republic.
Following HP's $18.7 billion (€18.87 billion) merger with Compaq, the combined firms have more than 4,200 staff at facilities in Dublin, Belfast and Galway.
An HP spokeswoman said last night it was a very good result for HP Ireland and the total job losses would be less than 80 staff. "We don't have the same number of overlapping businesses here," she said. "The cuts will be spread throughout the business."
