The EU said yesterday it had opened an inquiry into whether Microsoft's new operating system broke EU competition law, but the US software giant said the move would not interfere with its plans to launch Windows 2000 next week.

In a surprise announcement, EU Competition Commissioner Mr Mario Monti said the Commission had sent Micro soft a formal request for information last week.
