Compaq Computer yesterday reported a jump in first-quarter earnings to $281 million (€265 million), but called the performance "disappointing and unacceptable". The company's results were, however, slightly above market expectations.

Compaq reported first-quarter earnings per share of 16 cents, on revenues of $9.419 billion, up from $5.687 billion.
