Mr John Callaghan (57) succeeded Professor Micheal McCormack as chairman of First Active in April. A former managing partner at KPMG he recently benefitted from British Telecom's takeover of Esat Telecom.

As a director of Esat, Mr Callaghan stands to gain about £2 million before tax from his share options in that company.

He has been a member of First Active's board since 1993. He was appointed vice-chairman in 1997 and is also chairman of the audit committee.

Mr Callaghan is a non-executive director of a number of Irish companies including Glanbia and BUPA.

Mr John Smyth (50), joined First Active in 1972 and was appointed chief executive in 1993. He began his working career in auctioneering and went on to become manager of the then building society's Phibsboro branch in Dublin before his appointment as personnel manager in 1978.

He became general manager - development in 1989 and secretary of the society in 1992. He was raised in Haddington Road in Dublin where his family operated Smyth's public house. It was sold last year.
