BRITISH cable operators should unite to form a billion dollar company capable of competing with BSkyB and British Telecom, Mirror Group's chief executive urged today.

Mr David Montgomery said cable had been held back by a failure "to recognise the dominance and importance" of the British culture.

He told delegates at the European Cable Communications Conference in London that operators faced losing billions of pounds already invested in cable unless they joined forces under a new umbrella company.
