Business and sporting leaders pay respects to Tim Mahony

BUSINESSMAN DR Tim Mahony will be remembered for his good humour, loyalty, energy, kindness and common sense, mourners, including politicians, sports figures and motor industry colleagues were told at his removal last night.

Hundreds of people packed St Fintan’s Church in the north Dublin suburb of Sutton to mourn the chairman of the Killeen group. The group’s businesses include Toyota Ireland, Lexus Ireland, Mount Juliet Estate and Ballylinch Stud.

Many leading motor industry figures paid their respects to the man who made Toyota a market leader in Ireland. These included Nigel O’Flaherty of MDL, current and former heads of Ford Ireland Eddie Murphy and Eddie Nolan, as well as David Shannon and Jim Cusack of Toyota Ireland.

Mourners also included GAA president Nickey Brennan, Gaelic games commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, horse trainer Jim Bolger and Munster rugby chief executive Garrett Fitzgerald.

Founder of the Progressive Democrats Des O’Malley also attended last night’s removal.

Mr Mahony hosted three Irish Open Golf Championships and two American Express World Golf Championships (2002 and 2004) in Mount Juliet. He also led Toyota Ireland’s sponsorship of Munster Rugby.

“People have come in great numbers, and Tim would be proud to see a great crowd,” Sutton parish priest John Fitzpatrick said.

“The people gathered were showing care for his friends and relatives in their time of sadness.”

Mr Mahony is survived by his wife Maeve, daughters Joan, Jenny, Sarah and Mary, his brother Denis and sisters Joan and Mary.

His funeral takes place in Sutton at 11.30am this morning.
