Britain's trade gap with the rest of the world narrowed sharply in May, but the country's top business lobby warned the improvement would be short-lived with export orders tumbling under the strain of the soaring pound.

The Office for National Statistics said yesterday Britain's global trade gap totalled £508 million sterling (£577 million) in May, down from

£989 million in April.
