Suir Engineering is to hire another 200 staff, which will bring the number of people working there to 1,600.
Hiring has already started for the roles and will be increased “incremental over the next year,” human resources director Claire Cusack said. The jobs will be in Ireland as well as centres in the UK, Germany, Sweden and Denmark.
It comes as the company, which provides electrical, mechanical and high-voltage engineering services, announced details of a centre it has opened to train apprentices which will support the country’s SOLAS training program. SOLAS works with education boards across the country to develop further education and training programs.
“Apprentices are the lifeblood of our industry, and at any one time, we could have up to 400 apprentices in the business,” chief operating officer Brendan Moley said. The training at the centre will make sure all apprentices “undergo training before joining our qualified professionals on-site,” he added.
The company said it wants this training model to become the industry standard and a blueprint for apprentice training. Ms Cusack said participants will undergo a number of programmes in the training centre as well as specialised safety courses needed for site work.
The announcement comes as part of Suir Engineering’s overall European growth strategy and the firm said there is a need for skilled workers across the sector.
“Men and women in their 30s and 40s are upskilling and they see Suir Engineering as a strong option for a career change and have made the decision to go back to the classroom,” Mr Moley said.
Suir Engineering reported a turnover figure of €429 million for 2023, a 41 per cent growth compared to the previous year. In 2022, Suir Engineering was bought by private equity firm Duke Street.
