Dundrum: more than just the Town Centre

Hidden gems, choice of schools, access to public transport are just some of the factors that make Dundrum much more than just the shopping centre

The Dundrum Experience

Dundrum has transformed over the past 20 years. The primary catalysts for this change, the introduction of the Luas in 2004 and the opening of the Dundrum Town Centre in 2005, created a level of accessibility and amenity that are the envy of most towns and villages in the country. One of Europe's largest shopping and leisure centres, it has more than 165 shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as a 12-screen cinema. However, due to the scale of this facility, the name “Dundrum” has become synonymous with the Dundrum Town Centre, despite the fact that it has so much more to offer.

This predominantly Victorian village, which saw its first great expansion after the arrival of the Dublin and South Eastern Railway in 1854, has never lost its charm and sense of community. It bustles daily with locals going about their business in cafes, banks, surgeries, hairdressers, beauticians and pharmacies. Despite the changes over the years, its soul and character remains unfettered (if not enhanced).

So, what other hidden gems does Dundrum have to offer? Well, for entertainment, the Mill Theatre, with its regular live shows is right in the village centre. There are also plenty of dining options with a huge variety of tastes catered for: the Port House Iberico offers a range of tapas; Siam Thai a flavour of the East; Jamie’s Italian superb pasta; Five Guys the best of American burgers and so on … not to mention The Brickyard Gastropub (ideal for brunch or perhaps just a drink on its outdoor terrace), Cooke’s Restaurant above Harvey Nichols (which is a great option prior to an evening performance at the Theatre) and the soon-to-open Fallon and Byrne. The Candlelight bar, Dundrum’s first cocktail emporium and piano bar, is a must too.

For families, the abundance of educational, sports, recreational and medical facilities in Dundrum means that every need is catered for and readily accessible to all its residents. Leading schools include Mount Anville primary and secondary school, Wesley College, Saint Olafs National School, St. Attracta’s and Scoil Naithi national schools. Sports and recreational facilities include Meadowbrook swimming pool, Marlay Park, The Grange Golf Club and Balawley Park, with numerous nature walks a short drive away in Ticknock Hill, Enniskerry’s Powerscourt Estate and Waterfall and the Dublin Mountains.

And of course there is the Airfield Estate literally in the village. Home to the Overend family since 1894, it is a maze of fields, gardens, a museum, vintage cars, private function rooms and the "farm to fork" dining at Overend's Restaurant. Airfield was left in trust to the people of Ireland by Letitia and Naomi Overend in 1974 and, in the words of the current caretakers, is "a place where clean air, natural beauty, healthy food and a sustainable lifestyle can make a real difference in people's everyday lives and inspire lasting change". The 38 acre protected estate is an oasis of calm and presents a welcome time warp where peace and open space are the only priority.
For those wanting to access the city centre (or indeed more northside or southside locations) the Luas, which has two stops in Dundrum, allows residents to leave the car behind. Stephen's Green is just a 15-minute ride and trams run every few minutes throughout the week.
