BOLTON hammered five past Stoke yesterday to gain sweet revenge for last season’s FA Cup semi-final defeat by the same opponents. Ivan Klasnic and Chris Eagles both struck twice at the Reebok Stadium as struggling Bolton secured a win that could kickstart their troubled season.

Captain Kevin Davies also got on the scoresheet as Bolton claimed the points. Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic was at fault for both Bolton’s opening goals but there was no doubting the superiority of the hosts after that.

WOLVES MANAGER Mick McCarthy described his side’s 3-1 victory over Wigan as a “great result” as they moved up to 13th in the Barclays Premier League.

Jamie O’Hara’s opener for the Molineux side was cancelled out by Ben Watson, following up his own saved penalty, before second-half goals by David Edwards and Stephen Ward clinched victory.

McCarthy and his players criticised Wigan defender Antolin Alcaraz after television replays appeared to show him spitting at Wolves right-back Richard Stearman.
