Club career: Givens began his English league career with Manchester United in 1969, making only a handful of first team appearances before transferring to Luton a year later. However it was at Queens Park Rangers, where he spent six years, that he had the most successful spell of his career, finishing the 1975-76 season as the club's top scorer when they were runners-up to Liverpool in the League. Had spells with Birmingham City and Bournemouth (on loan) before joining Sheffield United in 1981, his last English club (where he is remembered as the man who missed a last minute penalty against Walsall that would have saved the club from relegation to Division Four). Joined Swiss club Xamax Neuchatel as a player before taking over from German international Uli Stielike as first team coach. Also had a spell in charge of Neuchatel's youth system.
International career: Made his international debut against Denmark in May 1969, three months before he played for Manchester United's first team. Scored 19 goals in 56 appearances, his final cap coming against France in the last game of the 1982 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Highlight: Scored the quickest ever Irish international hat-trick (in nine minutes) in October 1975 against Turkey at Dalymount Park, in a European Championship qualifier - also scored a hat-trick against the USSR a year earlier, in the same qualifying campaign.
Where is he now? Now 49, Givens is youth coach at Arsenal, where his former international team-mate Liam Brady is Head of Youth Development. Led the club to the FA Premier Youth League title and Southern Junior Floodlit Cup last season.
