Manchester United have warned UEFA that they cannot wait unduly for the European governing body to respond to the breakaway European Super League proposals.

As UEFA'S executive committee prepared to meet yesterday in Monaco to consider counter-proposals, the United director Peter Kenyon insisted there had to be "some urgency" to the discussions.

Kenyon, United's main negotiator in secret ESL talks, said: "We've not committed to anything, apart from evaluating the proposals that are on the table from Media Partners (ESL's organisers) and the expected proposals from Uefa.

"But we can't wait ad infinitum. We're talking about a competition starting in 2000 and you can't decide to do things only a couple of months before the event."
