FITZGIBBON CUP:Cork IT 2-11 1-9 GMIT

A STRONG second-half display which yielded a brace of goals helped Cork IT to get their Fitzgibbon Cup campaign off to a winning start at Ballinderreen yesterday and in the process send the Galway college crashing out.

Cork IT trailed by 1-4 to 0-4 at the interval against a GMIT side who lost their opening game to UCC, but a goal in the 51st minute by substitute Tony Murphy put them on the road to victory.

The game started in an ill-tempered manner when a brawl erupted after GMIT’s Andrew O’Shaughnessy was brought down in the sixth minute and once the dust settled the Limerick star blasted home the penalty.

Cork IT started the second half well, with two points from frees from Neil Rogers coming either side of a point from corner forward Enda Feeney to level the sides after 33 minutes.

Murphy struck for his decisive goal and frees from Adrian Mannix and Ryan Clifford created a five-point gap between the sides by the 54th minute. O’Shaughnessy hit back with two frees for GMIT, but a goal from Brian Corry wrapped up the issue.
