Swede Henrik Stenson has become Europe's top player in the world for the first time, thanks to Luke Donald missing the halfway cut at the Nissan Open in Los Angeles last Friday.

Stenson was one of only two members of the world's top 10 — Tiger Woods was the other — who did not play at Riviera, but he moves up to eighth just 0.01 points ahead of Donald, who has now missed the cut in his last two starts.

Padraig Harrington, who fell away in yesterday's final round to finish seventh, remains the leading Irishman at tenth.

Charles Howell, who beat Phil Mickelson in a play-off, jumps 29 places to 16th, only one off his career high. Mickelson, who bogeyed the last hole to fall into a tie, moves back to third ahead of Adam Scott.
