How refreshing it is to see a growing number of celebrities give their precious time to charity organisations of various sorts. Tomorrow's Johnny Mathis Golf Classic at the Royal Belfast Club is no exception, even if the celebrities taking part are not exactly at the height of their careers.

Among those playing a round of golf in the fundraising event for Northern Ireland's NSPCC are American screen stars Howard Keel, best remembered for such musicals as Annie Get Your Gun and Calamity Jane, and Gil Gerard, better known as Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

British interests will be represented by Trevor Bannister from Are You Being Served, Ian Lavender, the face of Private Pike in Dad's Army, and Robert Powell who played Jesus of Nazareth. From the world of sport, Howard Kendall and Nobby Stiles will also take up the clubs.

Along with Johnny Mathis himself, best loved for his rendition of Misty and When A Child Is Born, other entertainers will include Brian Bennet, who once played drums with The Shadows. Now that's what you call an all-star cast - from the past. Get your autograph book out quick.
