LEINSTER COLLEGES SF A/St Peter's (Wexford) 2-4 St Pat's (Navan) 0-6:ST PETER'S College (Wexford) produced the shock of the Leinster Colleges Senior A Football Championship second round as they edged past St Patrick's (Navan) in Baltinglass yesterday.

Goals in either half proved vital for the Wexford town school, with Jamie Carty and Kevin O’Connor applying bookends to their side’s scoring tally with goals.

It was certainly no fluke either. Playing with a strong breeze at their backs in the opening period, St Peter’s moved the ball through their hands, with pace, and despite falling behind to David Dillon’s early point they hit back with a well-taken Carty goal.

However, the half-time lead of 1-2 to 0-3 should have been so much more, with the rangy fullforward twice being denied a second goal by superb saves.

Three points in 11 second-half minutes, with Niall Lyons grabbing a brace, put St Patrick’s ahead (0-6 to 1-2) and having dispatched their opponents with ease in last year’s championship they looked on course for a repeat.

However the Navan side failed to trouble the scoreboard in the final 19 minutes and points by Donal Shanley and Neil Rossiter were added to by a superbly-taken goal by O’Connor to see the Wexford side into the draw for the quarter-finals .
