Tendulkar's ton saves India

CRICKET:Sachin Tendulkar smashed a 44th Test century for India before Bangladesh lost three quick wickets to end the second day of the first Test in Chittagong on 59 for three yesterday.

Bad light forced an early close with no play possible after tea. Tendulkar hit an unbeaten 105 but India were bowled out for 243.

Resuming on 76 with India on 213 for eight, Tendulkar scored all but one of his country’s 30 runs in the morning session, the start of which was delayed by 90 minutes because of thick fog.

Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan and paceman Shahadat Hossain shared the two wickets that fell, both completing five-wicket hauls in the process.

Shakib took the wicket of Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, caught by Imrul Kayes at silly point for one, to claim his sixth “five-for” in tests with 5-62. Shahadat (5-71) provided Bangladesh with the first breakthrough of the morning with the wicket of Ishant Sharma.

Jets surprise Chargers with comeback victory

AMERICAN FOOTBALL: The New York Jets upset the San Diego Chargers to reach the AFC Championship game with a 17-14 win in southern California.

The Jets, with a first-year head coach in Rex Ryan and rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, outsmarted the AFC second seeds at Qualcomm Stadium to set up a trip to the top-seeded Indianapolis Colts next Sunday, who on Saturday had beaten the Baltimore Ravens.

The Chargers had gone into the game on the back of an 11-game winning streak in the regular season to finish with a 13-3 record as AFC West champions.

New York ended the first half just 7-0 down, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers having found Kris Wilson with a 13-yard touchdown pass.

The Jets got on the scoreboard at the start of the third quarter with a Jay Feely field goal and then the New York defence took over, containing Rivers with two interceptions and also seeing Kaeding miss his third field goal attempt of the game.

The fourth quarter saw Sanchez throw a touchdown pass into the end zone for Dustin Keller and then running back Shonn Greene broke the game open with a 53-yard touchdown run to put the Jets 17-7 ahead with seven minutes and 17 seconds remaining.

Rivers got the Chargers within three points when he rushed over the goal-line with 2:14 left on the clock but the Jets held onto the football for an upset victory.

Kilroy lands the spoils for High School

RUGBY:A last-gasp kick from outhalf Dean Kilroy sealed The High School's 19-18 passage to the second round of the Leinster Schools' (Section B) Fr Godfrey Junior Cup with Catholic University School at Guinness RFC yesterday.

The lead changed hands four times as CUS blasted back from a 6-0 deficit, courtesy of two Kilroy penalties, to post two unconverted tries from their number eight David Feenan and lock John Gavin either side of the break.

The winners rebounded when openside Gavin Power was driven to the line in a maul for their only try, converted by Kilroy, to reclaim the advantage before Feenan, from his second try, and outhalf Mark Hughes, with a penalty, made it 18-13 with time ticking on. But, Kilroy’s ice cool nerve held for two late penalties.

Skerries Community College just about deserved to squeeze out Ard Scoil na Trionoide 17-13 in a superb first-round encounter at Newbridge.

Botha back in SA Test squad

CRICKET: Off-spinner Johan Botha, who has been banned from bowling his doosra after it was ruled illegal, has been recalled to the South Africa Test squad for their tour of India next month.

Botha, 27, has played only two Tests for his country and was called for a suspect action on his Test debut against Australia in 2006. He was banned until he remodelled his action and subsequently cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

However, Botha was forced to undertake testing once again after his action was questioned in a one-day international against Australia and he was banned from bowling the doosra, the delivery which turns away from the right-hander.

Botha is included in the Test squad along with left-arm spinner Paul Harris, who was omitted from the fourth Test side who beat England by an innings on Sunday to square the series 1-1.

South Africa will play two Tests against India with the first scheduled to start in Nagpur on February 6th.

TEST SQUAD – Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Paul Harris, Jacques Kallis, Ryan McLaren, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Ashwell Prince, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

More injury problems for Connacht

RUGBY: Connacht have been hit by fresh injuries ahead of their final Amlin European Challenge Cup pool fixture against Olympic Madrid on Saturday, writes Linley MacKenzie.

Flanker Ray Ofisa joins fullback Gavin Duffy on the injured list after receiving a head injury in Connacht’s 20-10 victory over Montpellier on Friday night. There is also a question mark over captain John Muldoon who has a hamstring injury, while coach Michael Bradley says they are also likely to rest prop Brett Wilkinson. Scrumhalf Frank Murphy who picked up a calf injury will be fit to start.

Having already qualified for the quarter-finals as Pool Two winners, Bradley says Connacht will be travelling strong to Spain with hopes of grabbing a bonus-point win that could give them the top seed. That position is currently occupied by London Wasps who are one point ahead of Connacht on 22.
