Michael Owen made his Newcastle comeback last night and scored in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

The England striker had not played since last summer's World Cup where he ruptured his anterior cruciate knee ligament.

The 27-year-old scored after 10 minutes against Gretna but came off an hour later against  the Scottish Division One club.

He is hoping to play for the first team before the end of the season and could even be on the bench at Portsmouth on Saturday.

Owen was injured in the 2-2 draw against Sweden in June when he won his 80th cap for England.
