Jim Magilton has been confirmed as the new manager of Ipswich.

The former Northern Ireland international (37) succeeds Joe Royle, who left the club by mutual consent at the end of the 2005-06 season, and becomes the youngest manager in the Championship.

Ipswich had been given permission to speak to West Brom assistant manager Nigel Pearson and Colin Calderwood, who has since taken over at Nottingham Forest, but handed the role to the untried Magilton.

Magilton moves into his first managerial role after a playing career that started as a trainee at Liverpool and included spells at Oxford, Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and finally Ipswich, where he played over 250 games.
